Conceptual information This oil on canvas shows a Behike of Indigenous Taino origin in a medicine trance. The Taino people were the first Natives in the Americas to be contacted by European invaders in October of 1492, the first to be called Native Americans, and the least taught about in the school systems. Their brutal treatment by conquistadors, enslavement, and near complete genocide did not make them extinct as the story books may wish, but the language, traditions, and spiritually of the original inhabitants are very much alive today in the descendants of those first people’s. The words tobacco, hammock, barbeque, canoe, cassava, maroon, cay, caiman, guava, hutia, hurricane, iguana, macana, maize, manatee, potato, mangrove, and savanna are just a few Taino Arawak words in use in English today, with dozens more in use in español as well.
